DOMINICAN REPUBLIC With a thick white cross at its center, the flag of the Dominican Republic, which was adopted in 1844, is split into four quarters - the upper left and lower right quarters are blue, while the upper right and lower left quarters are red. The blue stands for liberty; the red for the fire and bloodshed of the struggle for independence; and the white cross symbolizes the sacrifice of the people.
