CHILE Two equally sized horizontal stripes make up the flag of Chile; the top stripe is white, symbolizing the snow of the Andes. The red bottom stripe represents the blood of patriots who fought for the independence of Chile. Occupying the top left hand corner of the flag, covering a portion of the white stripe, is a blue square of the same size. Centered in the blue square is a white five point star, stressing the fact that Chile is a Unitarian republic, and not a federal republic. Adopted in 1817, Chiles flag is one of the oldest in the world.
